Febuxostat 40 mg Tablets are categorized as an anti-gout medication, specifically known as a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, and are widely prescribed to avert severe gout episodes or flares. Gout is a persistent condition resulting from the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints, leading to excruciating pain and swelling in the affected areas. Febuxostat helps prevent sudden pain episodes caused by intense gout and alleviates pain, swelling, and inflammation.

How Do Febuxostat 40 mg Tablets Work?

Febuxostat Tablet contains the active ingredient febuxostat. It functions by blocking the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which assists your body in producing uric acid, thus lowering uric acid levels in your system. This reduction in uric acid decreases inflammation caused by crystals in the joints, ultimately minimizing pain, swelling, and inflammation. Febuxostat is intended to prevent gout attacks or flares.

Directions For Use and Its Side Effects

Your physician will guide you on the frequency of taking Febuxostat depending on your health status. Some common side effects associated with Febuxostat include nausea, rash, dizziness, diarrhea, pain, rash, abnormal liver function test results, gout flare-ups (sudden, intense joint pain often occurring at night), and localized swelling due to fluid retention (edema). Most of these side effects typically do not necessitate medical attention and tend to resolve on their own over time. However, if any side effects persist, contact your doctor.

Precautions To Be Taken

  • Do not discontinue Febuxostat without consulting your physician.
  • Discontinuing the medication may exacerbate your condition and raise the likelihood of increased uric acid levels and subsequent gout attacks.
  • Let your doctor know if you are allergic to Febuxostat or any other medications, have heart issues (as Febuxostat may induce heart problems that could result in a heart attack), or suffer from kidney or liver disease.
  • Some individuals might experience more gout flare-ups upon initiating treatment with Febuxostat.
  • It is important to continue taking this medication even if gout flare-ups occur. Your physician may prescribe a combination therapy to help prevent flare-ups when you start using Febuxostat.
  • The safety and efficacy of this medication in children under 18 have not been established, hence, it should not be administered to them.
  • If you are expecting a child or breastfeeding, it is advisable to inform your doctor before starting Febuxostat.
